Fraud Legislation

Virginia passed legislation in 1998 to establish an Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit within the Virginia Department of State Police. Insurance fraud in Virginia is primarily investigated as Obtaining Money or Signature by False Pretense (§18.2-178). Insurance fraud sometimes occurs under other statutes, such as Arson and Forgery and Uttering. A fraudulent offense that exceeds $200 is a felony punishable by fines, orders of restitution and/or prison time.
